Chinese Crested Health Database

How to add Crested health information to this database:

  1. If test results are submitted to CERF and/or OFA, an email with the link to the information will be sufficient.
  2. Per email with the following information:
    1. the dog's registered name without titles;
    2. date of birth (mm.yy);
    3. the dog's parents registered names without titles;
    4. the date of the health test (mm.yy);
    5. copy of the test results*.

* All submissions must be accompanied by a copy of the results issued by the recording veterinarian or by an official body such as CERF. We prefer that you scan or photograph the health documents and send them to us as an email attachment. To prevent possible errors in the database, only clear, legible documentation can be accepted. Documents must be clear enough that there is no question as to the dog's name and the date and results of the exam. If you are submitting results other than a standard AVCO or CERF form, please make sure that the veterinarian's name/signature is legible.

Blood Collection Instructions

Our breed has a disease called Legg Calve Perthes Disease (LCPD). This disease is caused by the disruption of the blood supply to the head of the femur (the round bone which fits into the hip socket). When this happens, the result is death of bone cells and femur head gets deformed. There appears to be an increasing incidence of this disease showing up in Chinese Cresteds. This lead to contact with researcher Alison N. Starr, Ph.D, Assistant Research Professor on Canine Genetics Laboratory at Clemson University.

They are very interested in including the Chinese Crested in the study and this is a big oppertunity for us to identify the mutation causing LCPD and we could have a genetic test in the future (like we have with prcd-PRA).To accomplish this we need your help!!! The minimum blood samples required is 25 affected and 25 unaffected but the more samples they get over all increases the odds of them identifying the gene/s involved in this disease.

prcd-PRA CONTEST Winner!!!

When we received 2000 dogs tested for prcd-PRA, we held a RANDOM DRAW from all qualifying dogs, the winner to receive a wonderful bed from Pat's Pet Beds.

Our winner was NBISS CH Les-Lee's No Jacket Required owned by Leslie Gould. "Phil" has also been screened for Hips, Elbows, LCP, Patella, Cardiac, and CERF.

Thank you everyone for submitting your results, and watch this space for future contests!

This site was created to be a free place for breeders and owners to share health information about Chinese Cresteds. While the breed is generally healthy there are genetic health issues that people need to be aware of. Sharing information and test results is a big step in helping the breed to be happy and healthy. We welcome all test results and information from breeders and owners. It is important to everyone to know that breeders test before buying a Crested.

The database, maintained for the welfare and betterment of the Chinese Crested breed, includes health information that is voluntarily submitted by dedicated breeders and owners worldwide.

Owners are encouraged to submit any additional health information along with CERF, ERG, and BAER results such as carrier status, other test results, related complications, etc.

Note: As you view the Database, it is important to know that the results of eye exams are all recorded under the column titled CERF. Although CERF is not used in countries other than the United States and Canada, for our purposes, CERF will be used to indicate that an eye exam similar to the CERF exam was performed by a qualified veterinary opthalmologist.

The accuracy of the information on this site is solely the responsibilty of the submitting person(s) who has provided documentation that appears to be valid.
